How to turn your bathroom into a sanctuary

Posted By Better Living in Organized Bath | No Comments

CaptureWe often forget that bathrooms can be a place for rest and rejuvenation.  In the mornings, the kids are often fighting over the sink as they get ready for school.  Or you may find yourself bumping elbows if you’re forced to share a small bathroom with your spouse.  But after all the haggling, wouldn’t it be nice to come home to a quiet space that induces a spa-like atmosphere?

Well, you’re in luck!  There are lots of ways to turn an otherwise hectic bathroom into a sanctuary of calm and serenity.

Install a dimmer switch

Head over to your local hardware store and purchase a simple dimmer switch.  They typically cost between $20 – $30 and you don’t have to be an expert to install one.  Dimming the lights can instantly bring about a tranquil atmosphere, and you can adjust the dimness to your preference.  Imagine sitting in a hot bath without the glare of fluorescent bulbs in your eyes.

Treat yourself to a luxurious towel

Nothing provokes feelings of posh and spa-like luxury quite like a high-quality towel.  Rich towels in soothing colours can make you feel heavenly after stepping out of the shower.  Even though toweling off takes mere minutes, a luxurious towel can instantly bring joy to your day!

Paint the walls in soothing colours

Certain colours have the ability to calm our thoughts and promote peace.  Soft tones of blue, lavender and even grey can transform your bathroom into a sanctuary. Avoid painting the walls in crisp white or bold hues as these colours tend to “awaken” the senses, rather than calm them.

Replace shower curtain and accessories

Sometimes, all it takes to turn your bathroom into a spa oasis is to change up your shower curtain. Pick one in a neutral tone that doesn’t have a busy pattern. High-quality towel and a unique mirror can also transform your bathroom’s environment.

Experiment with aromatherapy

There are certain smells that are known to trigger tranquility.  Lavender, sandalwood and soft vanilla are known to do just the trick.  Avoid using aromatic sprays that can be harsh on the nose.  But rather, opt for incense oils that bring aromas into the air gradually.  Although incense sticks are popular, the resulting smoke can sting your eyes and burn your throat — ruining the spa-like experience.

Music makes everything better

Don’t you just love the New Age tunes that trickle in softly when visiting your favourite spa?  You can imitate that same experience by installing speakers and an iPod dock in a corner of your bathroom.  Choose albums that feature natural sounds (i.e. birds, rivers, tidal waves) to help enhance the mood during your next bath.
